Starting Hammer Research
I’m building Hammer Research, an independent project applying machine learning and open-source software to esophageal cancer research.
Why I started it
Hammer Research is in memory of my dad. Esophageal cancer is our initial focus, with plans to expand into other research areas over time.
What we’re working on
We review published research, analyze gene-expression data and build software that other researchers can inspect and reuse. Our current experiment asks whether gene-expression measurements can distinguish esophageal adenocarcinoma tissue from Barrett’s esophagus tissue.
That work is exploratory. It has not been independently validated and is not a diagnostic test.
The software
Our open-source Python libraries cover two parts of the work: hammer-pathways transforms gene-expression measurements into features for analysis; hammer-evidence provides checks for cohort metadata, evidence reviews and saved experiment results.
Researchers, developers and students can contribute by checking a source, reviewing study methods or reproducing a software example.
